New Directions: Further and Deeper Choices for the Theatre Director with Richard Corley
This class deepens the work from the first unit. Directors continue breaking down texts, with an emphasis on the works of Brecht and Shakespeare. Also, we touch on Spatial and Visual dynamics, the translation of ideas into space and time on stage. How do we shape space with actors in order to create exciting and powerful stage pictures? How do bodies in space tell a story? How do we use Rhythm, Motivation and Gesture, Music, and Form to create compelling theatre? We conclude our work in this class with three session of critiqued rehearsals with actors, ending with an "open rehearsal" presentation.
Texts used in this class are THE ART OF MAKING DANCES by Doris Humphrey, BRECHT ON THEATRE, and FIVE APPROACHES TO ACTING by David Kaplan.
Award-winning Director Richard Corley has created theatre across America and internationally, including many world premieres. He has served as Associate Producing Director of New York’s The Acting Company, and most recently as Artistic Director of Madison Repertory Theatre in Wisconsin, and has taught at major training programs including ACT in San Francisco, Brandeis University, NYU, Juilliard, SUNY Purchase, and many others. He recently moved to Chicago and continues as an Associate Artist of Berkshire Theatre Festival in Massachusetts while directing nationally.
