The On Camera Audition for Theatre
with a message from Jane Alderman

A very special one-day seminar with Jane Alderman to ready the professional stage actor for a taped THEATRE audition.

In the last few years many, many Equity auditions – especially for the larger houses that employ busy directors/writers from other cities – are being taped and then sent via internet link or DVD to the remote director where they then  pick from this video or announce who they would like to see on a call back when they are in town, etc.

Jane has designed this seminar specifically for the advanced actor faced with the growing reality that auditions, even for theatre, are going global.

10 actors will be given scenes in advance from a play to audition for a hypothetical 300-seat Equity theatre. 15 actors will be observers ONLY and participate in discussions

    10-1  “Initial auditions”

                 Feedback

      1- 2    Lunch break

      2 -5   “Call Backs”

A MESSAGE FROM JANE:
Such an odd thing isnʼt it? A camera class on auditioning for theatre?! Not really. Not anymore. The idea to offer a day long seminar on this subject didnʼt just pop into my head either. It started brewing several years ago when, as a casting director, I went to see a wonderful Equity actor in a production here. Afterwards we chatted and even though some audience members were clamoring for him backstage, and in spite of fact he had fabulous reviews, he was freaking out.

“Jane, I have a major Equity audition tomorrow, but they are taping it! I donʼt know what to do!”
I donʼt remember if he did well or got the role. I do remember his anguish. I promised him I would do something somehow. So here we are!

Since then many of my actor friends and former students have told me of their similar situations. Obviously we are now global. Many directors are out of town or country working during the time auditions are being held here. So it has become common to tape actors and upload to a website to be viewed later.

And then I experienced this process myself firsthand.
In the Spring of ʼ08 I had an audition at Steppenwolf for their summer offering; SUPERIOR DONUTS. I was all prepared and excited. I arrived at the creaky, echoing rehearsal hall and sat in the waiting area with many Equity actors all looking mighty anxious. From inside the audition room we could hear the current audition. I found out we were being taped since the director Tina Landau and the playwright Tracy Letts were both stuck in NYC and couldnt get on a plane due to weather and an airline shutdown.

This was truly driving the other actors bonkers yet it didnʼt seem to make any difference to me.

I love auditioning. I love the camera. I loved this role. So I went in and had fun. I was hired off of this tape. No callbacks. We had a great 12 weeks in Chicago and the following Fall we all went to Broadway! I knew then I had to help others over this very low and easy hurdle. If you love acting the camera is there to help give you an opportunity you might not otherwise have.
