Jane Alderman

JANE ALDERMAN, one of Chicago’s leading casting directors for 30 years, has cast theatre, feature films and television from her Chicago base with over 62 films, 70 television shows and series, and 36 major plays to her credit.  British-born and New York raised, she has made Chicago her home for 42 years.  Prior to casting, Ms. Alderman was an actress – her most notable performance being opposite John Malkovich and Glenne Headly in the Goodman Theatre’s groundbreaking production of Sam Shepard’s CURSE OF THE STARVING CLASS

 

In her recent return to acting she originated the role of “Lady Boyle” in Tracy Letts’ SUPERIOR DONUTS that had a successful run at Steppenwolf Theatre prior to the entire cast repeating their roles on Broadway. Jane also appeared in HONUS AND ME at The Goodman Theatre, numerous improv stints at IO and Annoyance Theatre, as well as in Marriott Lincolnshire’s FUNNY GIRL and the long running hit, VAGINA MONOLOGUES.  A few films to her credit include – her most recent being CONVICTION in a pivotal role opposite Hilary Swank and Minnie Driver.  She also appeared in THE BREAK UP playing Vince Vaughn’s mother, and THE MAN IN THE SILO co-starring with Ernie Hudson.  Her most recent TV role was a guest appearance on the popular ABC series, DETROIT 187.

 

Jane was the Chicago casting director for the television show, ER, for all of its seasons (15 years!)  Her other hefty casting credits include the films FRED CLAUS; RUDY; THE STRAIGHT STORY; FERRIS BUELLER’S DAY OFF and BACKDRAFT. For television: NORMAL; WHAT ABOUT JOAN; EZ STREETS; TURKS; EARLY EDITION and THE UNTOUCHABLES. She cast the National Tour of EVITA for Hal PrinceHer last project for Broadway was the Mark Medoff play, PRYMATE.

 

Jane taught at DePaul’s Theatre School for 20 years and is currently in her 8th year of teaching at Roosevelt University’s Chicago Center For The Performing Arts. Elsewhere in Chicago she is well known for her seminars and audition workshops. She produced a television pilot SAM HILL and for theatre she founded and produced the Jeff Award-winning ensemble THE DOGS in XENOGENESIS and DOGTOWN.

 

The winner of Casting Society of America’s Artios Award for Excellence in Casting for both Dramatic Pilot (EZ STREETS) and Movie of The Week (NORMAL) she has also been nominated for UNTOUCHABLES, TURKS and ER.  Most recently she was honored by Women In Film Chicago with their annual Focus Award, Eclipse Theatre’s Annual Corona Award, and was picked by Chicago Magazine as one of 29 Stars of The Movie Business in Chicago.

 

A member of SAG, AFTRA, AEA, she is very proud of her involvement with the program she co-created for the Chicago branch of SAG/AFTRA – CASTING ACCESS – making casting directors accessible to professional actors. Jane was a founding member of Women In Film Chicago, and an original member of Casting Society of America.  She shares her talent at workshops throughout the country including, Northwestern University, Stateville Correctional Center, Duke University, U. of Wisconsin at Milwaukee, Purdue, Western Michigan U., Kent State, Illinois State U., University of Minnesota/Guthrie Theatre, Indiana U.  and Adelphi U.  Jane is entering her 3rd summer teaching at The School of Steppenwolf.  She is a graduate of Adelphi University on Long Island.  She is currently writing a short novel.
