Policies

We pride ourselves on offering small, high quality classes. In order to maintain consistency in these areas, we have set out some Rules of the Road. The following policies will ensure all students receive the most from their training here. Please feel free to talk to us if you have any questions, concerns, or you would like to talk about your process.

If you’re ready to register for class, great! Here’s what you need to know:

Policies and Information for Adult Students (see below for Youth Policies)

By registering for classes at Acting Studio Chicago, you agree to the below terms and policies as well as fully release, discharge and indemnify Acting Studio Chicago and its employees, agents and representatives from any and all claims which may accrue on account of your participation.

Admission Requirements

Here at ASC, we take class placement very seriously and work to ensure each student is placed in a class that will appropriately challenge them.

Therefore, placement auditions are required for all new students.  Advancement in our classes is dependent upon consent of the instructor, based on student performance and commitment.

Placement in many of our advanced level classes may be determined by submission of headshot and resume. You can upload a current copy of your headshot and resume through your student account on our website.

Please call our office for instructions on how to apply for a class, or you may easily submit your application for a class via your student account.

Payment Options

Paying for Your Class

In order to secure your spot in one of our classes, you must make at least a $100 non-refundable deposit which is applicable toward your total tuition. You can also pay in full at the time of registration.

If you choose to make the $100 deposit, the remaining tuition will be due on the first day of class. For students paying by credit card in our online system, your tuition will be automatically charged unless you make other arrangements with our office staff at time of registration.

Once approved for a class, payments can be made through your student account via our website, or over the phone with our office staff.

Payment Plan

If there is need for a payment plan, students must agree to the following arrangement for completing your payment:

  • The balance can be broken down into 2 equal payments to be paid on the first day of class and the second day of class. There will be a $10 fee added to your tuition to cover the additional administrative and bookkeeping work. A valid credit card is required for the payment plan and will be automatically charged on the first and second days of class.
  • An extra $25 penalty fee will be charged to the remaining balance if a student is tardy in making payments.

Students who break the terms of this agreement will not be allowed into class until the remaining balance is paid.

Classroom Policies and Expectations for Adult Students

The work in most of our classes at Acting Studio Chicago is based on Michael Shurtleff’s book, Audition.  This book is required reading for all classes.  A thorough understanding of the 12 Guideposts will prove to be invaluable to you during your learning process.

Active participation in class discussions is strongly encouraged.  Learning how to watch other actors work and formulate articulate, constructive criticism will broaden and deepen your understanding of your own process.  Focus on making your feedback constructive and positive.  Avoid talking about symptoms or technical problems.  Because we consider your experience observing your classmates’ work to be such an integral part of your own learning process, we strongly discourage leaving class early.  If you must leave class early, please let the office or your instructor know as soon as you know so that we can make any necessary adjustments to the schedule for that evening.

Prep Work and Arrival Times:

Many of our classes require preparation outside of class. This helps our teachers maximize the time spent in the classroom.

For Core Levels and Cold Reading Classes: Your scenes for Core Levels and Cold Reading classes are available 1 hour before class starts.  Please treat this prep time as you would for an audition and give yourself every opportunity to do your best work.  Instructors put a lot of time into choosing your scenes and making appropriate scene partner pairings; therefore, it is essential that we know if you are going to be absent or late.  Call our office as soon as you know.  If we don’t see or hear from you 30 minutes prior to class start, we will have to reassign your scene.  This is not a punitive measure; it is to protect your scene partner and classmates.  In the event that we do reassign your scene, come to class anyway.  You will learn a lot from watching your classmates’ work!

For On Camera, Scene Study, Voiceover, Monologue, Other Classes: Please arrive at least 15 minutes prior to class start.  Use this time to get yourself centered and ready for work.  Relax, go over your assignment, but be ready to begin at the scheduled class time.  Late comers may be asked to wait until the break to be admitted to class.  In the event that you are assigned specific scene work for Camera class or anything that may require extra prep time before class, you will be informed at the prior class and given a call time for the following week.

Dress Code

Wear clothes and shoes in which you feel comfortable being physical.  Please keep jewelry to a minimum.

Eating and Drinking

Eating and drinking in class is permitted, but please eat quietly and pick up after yourself.  Please keep your work space clean for your fellow actors. We do not have a regular janitorial service, so your cooperation in leaving the space better than you found it is greatly appreciated. In accordance with Illinois law, smoking, including the use of e-cigarettes  is prohibited.

Phones and Texting

We wish we didn’t have to say it, but in today’s world… well, we have to say it. The use of cell phones and texting is strictly prohibited in our classes. Phones must remain on silent for the duration of your class. All phones and tablets must remain in your bag during class. There are no exceptions.

It is also not permitted to record audio or video for personal use during of any of our classes.

Attendance Policy

We take attendance very seriously as regular class attendance helps us offer consistency in the classroom. Acting is a team sport- so we encourage the whole team to be present and ready to work.

Therefore, we ask that you call our office at 312-527-4566 if you are going to miss class for any reason or will not be able to arrive 10 minutes prior to the start of your class. This helps us get classes started on time.

An absence is considered excused only if it is for an audition, rehearsal or shoot in the business (extra and print work are not included.)  You are entitled to make up the class in the following eight-week session, subject to space availability.  You are allowed up to 3 excused absences.  Please coordinate this with the office.  All absences NOT related to the business, however legitimate they are, are unexcused and cannot be made up.  We understand that emergencies happen, that you may get sick, etc… and we will do our best to keep you caught up with the rest of the class should you have to be absent. Unfortunately, due to space availability in classes, we cannot let these be made up in the next term. Regardless if the absence is excused or unexcused, if you miss two consecutive classes or three classes all together you will not be able to continue with class on an active basis. You may sit in and observe the remaining classes in your session. If something comes up in the middle of a session and you are unable to continue with class, please be sure to talk to us about it.

Please remember that we cannot reimburse you for classes missed.  You have made a valuable investment in yourself with these classes; get as much out of it as you can!

Parking

Please remember that parking can be difficult in the area. Give yourself plenty of time to find parking. Many of our students use apps such as Spot Hero or Park Whiz to find the best parking prices in the neighborhood.

For students in our evening classes, we have secured discounted parking with a nearby garage at 401 N. State Street (where Hertz Rental is located)  AFTER 5 pm. You will take a ticket upon entering the garage and buy a $10 validated voucher from our office. Please note, we are only able to sell vouchers BEFORE classes begin at 6pm. ONLY CASH WILL BE ACCEPTED. Please bring exact change if possible.

Because we cannot guarantee a large stock of validations, if you expect to drive to class on more than one occasion, we recommend you order multiple parking vouchers ahead of time. They do not expire. This is also a recommended solution if you ever expect to arrive for class after 6pm.

For daytime or weekend parking recommendations, please call.

Policies and Information for Youth Students

As with our adult classes, we work hard to make our young students’ time here positive, productive, and fun! The following rules and policies will ensure all students receive the most from their training here. Please feel free to talk to us if you have any questions, concerns, or you would like to talk about your child’s process. As a teaching institution, we believe that the more open and honest communication we have, the better it will be for all of us!

By registering for classes at Acting Studio Chicago, you agree to the below terms and policies as well as fully release, discharge and indemnify Acting Studio Chicago and its employees, agents and representatives from any and all claims which may accrue on account of your or your student’s participation.

Admission Requirements for Youth Students

ASC is a great fit for young actors who are serious about training and are looking for a fun, positive, and nurturing professional environment.

Previous training is not a necessary requirement when applying for most classes at ASC. However, prior to registering, we do ask that our students submit a photo and resume through their student account on our website, as getting to know our students is a priority for us! (If your student does not have a professional resume, that is fine. A list of relevant experience and interests is great.)

If you would prefer to not register online, feel free to give us a call.

Classroom Policies and Expectations for Youth

Classroom Policies

Active participation in class discussions is strongly encouraged.  Please keep feedback and class conversation positive, supportive and focused. We believe students learn a lot in watching each other work and in celebrating each other’s successes. Because we consider our students’ experience observing their classmates’ work to be such an important part of your own learning process, we strongly discourage leaving class early.  If your student must leave class early, please let the office or your instructor know as soon as you know so that we notify your teacher and they can adjust class accordingly.

Prep Work and Arrival Times

Please arrive 15 minutes prior to class start.  Your student can use this time to get focused and ready for class. If students are given an assignment in advance, they will be expected to prepare and be ready by the time they arrive for class. The moments before class are a great time to review what they’ve already done- not to do their initial work.

Dress Code

We ask that students wear clothes and shoes in which they feel comfortable being physical.  Please keep jewelry to a minimum.

Eating and Drinking

Eating and drinking is prohibited during class time. Breaks are provided for eating & drinking but please pick up after yourself.  We do not have a regular janitorial staff, so we ask that students please keep the work space clean for their fellow actors.

Cell Phones, Tablets, and Texting

The use of cell phones and tablets is strictly prohibited in ASC classes as they distract from the work taking place in the room. Students will be asked to turn their phones into the office at the beginning of class and will be allowed to pick them up before leaving for the day. Alternately, students may choose to leave their phones and devices at home on class days.

Attendance Policy
