MASTER SCENE STUDY WITH LAWRENCE GRIMM

Deep Personalization: The Moment Before, During and After

This class explores personalization and the art of investing fully in a role. With the understanding that the pursuit of the Shurtleff Guidepost “moment before” can launch us into a fully realized scene in which we live and breathe fully, make a strong personal connection and embrace the circumstances, what might our advanced work look like when we invest even more more deeply into the facts of our scenes? How can we deepen relationship, personalization, truth and specificity of choice through inference and intuition? What is the unpredictable power of the “as if” from our off-stage lives when appropriately applied through the imagination?

With two varied and challenging scenes for each student, this class will investigate the role history can play in unlocking and activating the other key Guideposts essential to crafting compelling, in-depth and honest stage work.

Lawrence Grimm is an award-winning actor and founding member of A Red Orchid Theatre. He has worked at Goodman, Steppenwolf, Chicago Shakespeare, Timeline, Lookingglass, Shattered Globe, etc. He is currently playing the titular role in Uncle Vanya with The New Theatre Project.

My first Actor's training I ever took was Intro to Shurtleff with Joshua, and On Camera Intro with Sarah Charipar. Both classes- because of the instructors- unlocked my brain into the world of immersing myself into imagination and critique of self. Because of ASC, I have been able to dive deep into an evolution of my auditions. Last year, I worked on a short film that was nominated for multiple film festival selections. I recently booked another short film, which begins filming next week. The current training with Christina [Gorman] allowed myself to be warmed-up and prepared for my booking. I'm extremely grounded in the fact that out of all training types I have received so far, ASC is a hidden gem of Chicago and possibly the U.S. Thank you ASC--I'm so happy to have learned everything I have so far from you.
